Today we celebrate one of the Three B’s. Happy Birthday, Bach!
Considered one of the greatest Western composers of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach was born on this day in 1685. He was born in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany to a family of musicians. His father was the town musician for Eisenach and taught Bach how to play violin at an early age.
At age 18, in 1703, Bach got his first job as a musician when he became the court musician for Duke Johann Ernst in Weimar. This job required him to play the violin and fill in as organist from time to time. Throughout his career, Bach worked for several churches, a Duke and even a Prince!
Bach died in Leipzig in 1750. During his lifetime, he was known primarily as an organist, not a composer. Very little of his compositions were published during his lifetime. However, his work was greatly admired by many of the popular composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn) who lived after him.
