Music History Monday: March 7

Today we celebrate the release of “We Are the World”, which was released as a single on March 7 in 1985.

This song was written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson and was recorded for charity to help battle famine in Africa. The song brought together an impressive list of musicians and celebrities to record the song and features Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles,  Cyndi Lauper, Dionne Warwick, and Dan Aykroyd! The song sold over 20 million copies and was the fastest selling American pop single in history.

The song was re-recorded in 2010 after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. This new recording was produced by Quincy Jones (who produced the earlier version) and executive produced by Lionel Richie (one of the original writers). The new version features new celebrities, but is musically structured similar to the original with the addition of a  for a newly written rap verse. This re-structured version was released during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
