Preschool Music- Let’s Make a Drum!

Did you see our post last week about the benefits of preschool music? Are you looking to create a musical rich environment for your child? One thing you can do is check out our new Summer Preschool Music Camp, and start creating a music friendly home!

How can you help foster that musical rich environment for you child without spending a ton of money? Make your own instruments! Today, I present easy instructions to construct  a drum for your child; perfect for beat keeping, noise making, and all-around fun!

Things to gather:
* Tin can (without the lid) and a balloon
* rubber bands
* OR coffee can or oatmeal canister WITH the lid
* decorations- stickers, construction paper, feathers, markers
* sticks or dowels for drum sticks!
* dried beans, rice, or beads to place inside drum

To Assemble:

Place some dried beans, rice, or beads inside your container. Place the lid on your container. Now your drum can be a shaker too! If your container is missing a lid, take a balloon and cut the end off. Stretch the balloon over the container opening and secure with rubber bands. Next, decorate your drum! Use whatever decorations you have on hand; stickers, different colored string, construction paper, feathers- anything will work! If you have some dowels you can use those for drumsticks. Or you can go outside and find some sticks!. If you are using a tin can for your drum, you can take your stick and scrape the side of the can- this makes your drum a güiro too!
