Happy February! On this day in 1949, RCA first introduced the 45 RPM record. How many of you remember these?

Comparable sizes of LPs, 45s, and CDs

These smaller vinyl discs (7 inches wide instead of 12) introduced by RCA for the release of “singles”; separate songs or shorter recordings that could be released before a full length album or released for promotional uses. These 45s were able to play at a faster speed which resulted in better sound quality. These discs were also were more durable than the 78 rpm discs that were previously used for single releases.
