Music History Monday: Happy Birthday Etta James!
Today, January 25, we celebrate the birth of Etta James. Born Jamesetta Hawkins, she was an American singer who was credited with helping bridge the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She is most well known for songs like, “At Last”, “Something’s Got a Hold On Me”, and “I’d Rather Go Blind” for which she wrote the lyrics.
She won six Grammy Awards, the first in 1995 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her albumĀ Mystery Lady, in which she covered Billie Holiday songs. In 2003 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1993 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is ranked number 22 onĀ Rolling Stone‘s 100 Greatest Singers of All Times list.
