David Bowie passed away Sunday, January 10, in New York, surrounded by family. The 69 year old entertainment industry pioneer lost an 18 month battle with cancer. While he kept his condition a secret, the lyrics in his 25th studio album, Blackstar, released just two days before his death, hints at the severity of his condition.

Bowie’s producer, Tony Visconti suggested in a Daily Mail interview, that Bowie had known for a year of his terminal condition and recorded Blackstar as a swan song that was his parting gift to the world.

A true champion of his art, Bowie’s ever evolving style and musical persona spanned the genres of jazz (Blackstar), metal, (the band Tin Machine), dance (“Let’s Dance”), and what could arguably be the creation of glam rock (Ziggy Stardust). With this envelope creating persona, much of today’s music has been directly influenced by this musical pioneer. It is safe to say, he will be missed by many.
