Smashing Sales: Adele’s 25

Adele is no stranger to record sale success topping charts with both 19  and 21, but with her third studio release, 25, she is smashing sales records, and shattering predictions of the album’s success.

Adele’s third album, released on November 20, sold a whopping 2.433 million copies in its first week. This gives the album the biggest sales week ever since Nielsen Music started tracking sales in 1991. These sales beat the record long held by NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, which sold 2.416 million in its first week in 2000.

The album is also on track to becoming the top-selling album of the year so far, besting the 1.8 million copies of Taylor Swift’s 1989 sold in 2015. Even more impressive is that 25 does not have streaming figures factored into its overall sales; as the album is not available on services like Spotify and Apple Music.

The lead-off single, “Hello”, released in late October, has spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has sold 2.55 million downloads. Currently, it is the year’s eighth-largest selling song.

If anything, these numbers tell us that Adele’s four year hiatus from the music scene were well worth the wait.
