Albert Einstein is often revered as one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century. He developed the General Theory of Relativity, which is one of the two pillars of modern physics. However, what a lot of people don’t know, is that Einstein directly attributes his Theory of Relativity to music.

Einstein and his Violin

“I often think in music”, Einstein stated. He grew up in a musical family, and started playing the violin at age five. He was also proficient in piano. When asked about his theory of relativity, Einstein said it was a “musical thought” that came to him very intuitively. He credits music with allowing him to get in touch with his intuitive thinking, and even said that thought, in its highest form, is not mathematical- but musical.

Einstein often used his music to work through any issues he encountered when working on theories or problems. His wife, Elsa, said that often he would stop his work, sit and strike a few chords on the piano, jot some things down, and then resume his work. Einstein felt a deep connection to harmony and drew parallels from music to his own life.

In fact, to celebrate his most famed discovery, the confirmation of his Theory of Relativity, Einstein went out and purchased a new violin, to pay homage to this very important force in his life.

“I know that the most joy in my life has come to from my violin” Einstein said, who was a musician first, and a scientist second. For further reading about Einstein’s love of music, check out this article.
