6 Ways to Encourage a Love of Music in Your Home

Dreaming of music lessons for your child? Wondering how in a world continually dominated by phones, TVs and other electronics you will be able to put a little music in your child’s life? Never fear, Here is a quick list of 6 ways to encourage a love of music in your home.

1. Listen to Music. One of the easiest ways to introduce your child to music? Let them hear it! This can be as simple as listening to music on the radio in the car. Playing soothing music close to nap/bed time is another good idea. Classical music works well for soothing young ones, but if that is not your style, check out the Rockabye baby CDs (your favorite rock tunes arranged as lullabyes!)

2. Move to music. Encourage your child to move to music when listening, this helps them explore rhythm and tempo!

3. Attend a Live Performance. If you’re a Music City native, this is not hard to achieve.   Live music can be found here every day of the week. Many of our local “houses of sound” have family programs too! (Nashville Symphony, The Factory in Franklin, Nashville Library, Country Music Hall of Fame) If you’re not local, there are bound to be local concerts or events for you and your family to enjoy.

4. Sing Songs or Rhymes. Remember all those songs from  your childhood? Wheels on the Bus, Head shoulders knees and toes, If you’re happy and you know it, Old McDonald, any of those your child would love to sing with you! Don’t know any songs or rhymes? Make some up! You may feel silly, but your child is guaranteed to move hearing you singing and having fun.

5. Let Your Child Make Noise. Encourage your child to play and make noise. Let them explore the noises they can make in their environment, but introduce them to new noises as well. Hand them a metal bowl and a spatula, I guarantee they will go to town and have a great time doing it!

6. Enroll in Music Lessons.  Finally, one of the best ways to get your child involved in music is to enroll them in lessons. Music Star Studios offers lessons to students of all ages (including younger preschool aged students!) Not sure if your child is ready for lessons? Check out this blog post for some tips.

Hopefully this post inspires you to add some music in to your everyday activities and gets your child excited about making music!
