5 Reasons Music Lessons Deserve a Place in the Schedule

There has been more sightings of yellow school buses, the back-to-school sales abound, Tax Free weekend is upon us, and your child’s schedule is very quickly filling up with school, sports, clubs and other activities.  Here are 5 reasons why Music Star Studios thinks you should consider adding music lessons into that schedule.

Music Lessons are Fun!

1. Increase Memory Skills– Research shows listening to or playing music stimulates the brain and increases memory. In one study,  six children from ages 6-9 were given weekly music lessons. Six children of the same age were used as a control group and not given lessons. These preschoolers participated in the same actvities, and those with weekly lessons were shown to improve spatial temporal skills 34% more than the other children.

2. Improved Self-Discipline– Learning an instrument takes time and effort, which teaches patience and perserverance. Mastering pieces often requires working through sections multiple times and practicing often, which necessitates the perseverance of making practice a habit. Learning and mastering these skills will transfer easily to your child’s schoolwork and other avenues of your child’s life.

3. Self ExpressionMusic lessons open a new medium of emotional education and expression. Lessons allow students to “play” through the emotions of other composers as well as letting them explore their own emotions when creating their own pieces. Intellect and emotions are stimulated when students participate in the production of music, which leads to an enriched and meaningful life. Music lessons also open a line of creativity and imagination that allows for children to discover who they really are, while pushing them away from conformance, unlike other activities.

4. Higher Self- Esteem– Lessons help build a higher morale. Music students receive positive individual attention in one-on-one lessons while working hard and succeeding.  This positive attention from instructors fosters self esteem and self worth in students. This shows them that they are worthy of personal attention and that others believe in their success.

5. It’s FUN! Learning and mastering an instrument is fun! These lessons give students a chance to learn how to play their favorite songs, and provide entertainment for themselves, families, and friends. Music lessons also decrease stress and increase joy- and who doesn’t need a little more joy in their life? Making sure that students have fun is our top priority at Music Star Studios!

So as you prepare to send you child off to school, and are looking at sign-ups for soccer, karate, gymnastics, dance and all other manners of activities; consider adding music to the mix!
