Every Child Achieves: Music Recognized as Core Subject

It’s a good time to be a music educator. On July 16, Senate named music as a core academic subject in its Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization proposal, the Every Child Achieves Act. Passed by a large margin, 81 to 17, this legislation adds music, computer science, and physical education to the list of core academic subjects defined by the No Child Left Behind Act.

Supported largely by the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), members of the association and music education advocates flooded local lawmakers offices with more than 14,000 letters asking that music be specifically recognized as a core subject. The passing of this act has answered their requests.

“By naming music and arts as core subjects in the Every Child Achieves Act, the Senate has acknowledged and begun to address the national problem of the narrowing of the curriculum that has taken place under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for more than a decade now,” said the National Association for Music Education .

In my opinion, this legislation is important because it has the potential to shift our society’s perception of music as an extra-curricular activity to a discipline worth our time and support. With music considered a core subject, it is worth adequate funding and well trained teachers. This means that music programs will be well staffed; have well thought out, developed, curriculum; and have the resources necessary to create a musical environment accessible for any child.
