There are several music-related community events offered for young musicians in the greater Nashville area.

The one that I want to talk about today is the one that I consider to be the most strenuous.  This music-related community event is called the NAMTA Auditions.

NAMTA stands for Nashville Area Music Teachers Association, of which I am a member and a board member.  This event is particularly difficult because there is a two step process involved.

The first part of this process is the theory testing.  This takes place on a weekend day and all registered students must come in and take a series of theory tests.

There are several areas a student can choose to be tested in, including:

  1. Terms & Signs
  2. Written Theory
  3. Transposition
  4. Music History
  5. Aural Theory
  6. Technique
  7. Keyboard Harmonization

Each student must select 4 of the above areas to be tested in (if they are piano students) or 2 of the areas to be tested in if they are non-piano students.

They must receive a passing grade on all of the tests in order to advance to the second round of the auditions process, the performance auditions.

The Performance Auditions take place approximately one month after the theory tests.  Each registered student who passed their theory tests come in and performance a number of pieces from different music periods for a judge.  The judge scores the student either a Superior, Excellent, Very Good, Fair or Poor grade.  Those students who receive a Superior grade are then eligible to both play in an Honors Recital and also to compete in the Young Artists Achievement Award program, which is a state-wide competition for a monetary award.

If your child enjoys rigorous competition, then the NAMTA Auditions would be right for them!
