During the Holiday Season, I get a lot of phone calls and emails from people wanting to give their child/children or their significant other music lessons.  I always think this is a terrific idea because, while music is not a tangible gift, it is a gift that has many benefits.

One of these benefits is that people begin to have a healthy outlet for their emotions.  As their playing improves, the student turns to the instrument in their “down” time and find solace in the music.  I currently have one student who has breast cancer.  She told me during one of her recent lessons that piano and her family were going to get her through it.

Besides the emotional benefit, there is the joy one receives in a “job well done”.  I call this the Joy of Discipline.  The discipline it takes to actually sit down and practice is not easy!  There is a gift which lies in disciplining yourself to do the work:  it’s the satisfaction you feel afterwards that makes it worthwhile!  This helps to build self-esteem in children and adults alike!

And last, but not least, is the gift you can give back to other:  the perfect gift of music in our world!  I know so many people who use music in their lives to make them feel better, to get excited with, to commiserate their pain with – music is a universal language that is meant to be shared with others!  Once you learn an instrument and are starting to excel on it, others take notice and want to listen – ultimately, you then become the giver of the gift rather than the receiver!

To summarize, music is a great emotional outlet, brings satisfaction and self-esteem to children and adults alike and also becomes a gift to others when you excel at it!  So, are you looking for that perfect something to give this Holiday Season?  Why not give the gift of music
