It is important, from time to time, to be reminded of why we have made the commitment to music that we have. If we are involved in the teaching of music, it is our responsibility to see that education does not eclipse appreciation. Most students are in the early stages of their musical development, and things could really go either way. If they lose interest in their instrument, let it not be because we, as music educators, have relegated the simple inspiration of listening to the background.

Inspire Your Students During Their Music Lesson: Listen to Music!

Recently, I have discovered that listening to a piece of music, one which is both relevant to the instrument as well as fun, invigorating and inspiring is a great way to begin a lesson. In addition to serving as a reminder of why we have committed ourselves to music, the listening session helps to break up any tenseness the student may be feeling. Paying attention to the reaction of your student to a particular piece of music can help guide the lesson. If their ears gravitate towards a particular aspect, it can then be explored, and we know their interest will not be lost, but can be inspired.
Also, listening is great homework. Supplement the expectations of what your student is to accomplish from week to week with listening assignments. Choosing music that will inspire them on their instrument will only push forward their craft. We all know how it feels to lose inspiration, as well as how easily it can return with just the right song!
