STEPHEN SWEDISH BIOGRAPHY

“It was aristocratic playing which reminded this listener of the legendary Dinu Lipatti!” So, wrote the leading music critic of the Los Angeles Times on a recent recital performance of pianist Stephen Swedish.

Stephen Swedish has built an international reputation as recital soloist, soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras and as one of great chamber music pianists and collaborators on the stage today.

Right after he procured his initialĀ music contracts, he has toured around the world with some of the greatest artists of our time including violinists Henryk Szeryng and Josef Gingold; violist William Primrose; cellists Janos Starker, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Wolfgang Laufer, Raphael Wallfisch, and many others.

Stephen Swedish received his Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Music degrees from the renowned School of Music at Indiana University, where his major teacher and mentor was Menahem Pressler, pianist of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. While only in his second year at Indiana, internationally renowned cellist Janos Starker invited him to be his regular recital partner in tours around the world and in the recording studio. He has taught on the artist-faculties of the Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music, the University of Maryland School of Music, the University of Wisconsin and others. He has also taught in Europe, at the Conservatorio dall’Abaco in Verona, Italy, the Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy, and at the Haydn Conservatory of Music and the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria.

Teaching is a passion for Stephen Swedish and, in addition to his tour performances, he has given master classes in over 40 countries around the world. He has also adjudicated in major music competitions in the US and Europe.

Stephen Swedish was appointed an Artistic Ambassador by the U.S. State Department in 1996 and, in that capacity, has visited such faraway places as Cyprus, Malta, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazahkstan, the Republic of Georgia, Chile, and Argentina.

He has recorded on the RCA Red Seal, the Mercury and the Naxos recording labels. His recording of Italian Sonatas for Cello and Piano on Mercury with Janos Starker, was recently re-released.

Stephen Swedish lives in Wisconsin with his wife, Cynthia.
